912 Squadron
The Commanding Officer of 912 (Helensburgh) Squadron is Flight Lieutenant Derek McIlroy. The Squadron’s staff comprises Sergeant Mark Cameron and Civilian Instructors Charlie Smith, Kenneth Loch and George McCulloch. New adult staff are always welcome; no military experience is necessary. Come down to the Squadron for an informal chat.
The squadron also has a Civilian Committee and our Chaplain is Paul Jupp. The squadron adjutant’s post is presently vacant.
Other essential volunteer positions within the squadron involve fundraising or driving of cadets to or from events.
The Squadron presently meets every Monday and Wednesday 19:30 (7:30pm) until approx 21:30 (9:30pm) at its headquarters in Cumberland Road, Rhu, Helensburgh.
The squadron takes part in many activities including Sports, Adventure Training, Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme this is in addition to the normal syllabus of Aviation based subjects. Projects include squadron newsletter, training aids and taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.
On the first night a new cadet will be given a presentation of the squadron by a senior cadet, given a tour of the premises and then introduced to the cadets from there they will participate in the activities.
If you are between 13 years and 17.5 years and you have ever wanted to try powered flying or gliding or wanted to learn new skills like map reading, first aid or leadership and gain a BTEC award then the ATC should be your next stop.
